Membership of the Peterborough Young Lawyers Group (PYLG) is open to anyone above 18 years of age who is a law student, paralegal, legal executive, or a solicitor of up to 5 years’ experience. It holds events throughout the year, some for networking and others for fun. There is no membership fee and many events are subsidised by the Law Society. The PYLG has members from a broad range of firms- some big, others small - and connections to other networking groups within Peterborough, such as the Young Professionals.

The PYLG maintains close links with other professional networks in the area, and hosts guest speakers, who in turn provide insights into their careers. The group also provides soft skills development to members. Overall, the group focuses on building a positive profession in which young lawyers can work, by building career links.

Within Peterborough as a region, there is a full range of law firms to choose from, so anyone new to the area will find areas of law and types of law firm fully suited to their career ambitions.

Alongside career development, being a member of the PYLG provides ample opportunity to meet lawyers on a social level. Previous events include a night at the greyhounds, a gin tasting evening, a comedy night and a “ghost walk” for Halloween. The highlights of the year are the annual Summer BBQ and Winter Party. For full details of when these events will take place, join the PYLG mailing list - contact Jonathan at jpmumby@greenwoodsgrm.co.uk to be added.

For any young people moving into the Peterborough area for the first time, the PYLG reccomends that you get involved in the local Law Society: “the members are welcoming and come from a range of backgrounds and firms. We hold a variety of activities, which will allow you to meet the local profession and get involved in the local community.

Before you make a large career move and join the corresponding group of young professionals, it can be helpful to get the perspectives of existing members. Here’s what members of the PYLG have to say about what their group has to offer:

“Meeting fellow young lawyers through PYLG has been an incredible experience. Whether I am looking for advice and support, a trip to the theatre, an excuse for fancy dress or simply some good food with friendly faces, PYLG offers all of this and more. I have made fantastic friends and memories through being a member of PYLG and would recommend all young lawyers to join” - Umrah Mirza

“I think our JLD is a great way to meet other like-minded professionals in the local area and the regular events are fun and a good way to unwind after a busy working day. Being able to speak to trainees from other firms is also an interesting way to learn about other practice areas. The meals that we have had at local restaurants have been my favourite events, especially the Pizza Parlour!.”- Roxanne Dean

“PYLG is essentially a family of like-minded individuals keen to meet and share their legal journey with others over a light-hearted dinner or a game of bowling!”- Shamsher Singh

“Joining the PYLG is the quick and easy way of meeting people in the local profession. We hold a range of great activities throughout the year in relaxed and informal settings. If you are considering joining, please do! Membership is free and no obligation. If you have any questions please do contact a member of the committee, who will be happy to help. We look forward to seeing you at future events!” Jonathan Mumby, PYLG President

As one of the country’s fastest-growing cities, Peterborough is an exciting place to live and work, presenting many opportunities for young lawyers, as more and more digital businesses are being created in the city. You’ll also find that it’s cheaper than many counterparts; you’ll find it easier to get onto the property ladder and most likely will enjoy a substantial disposable income.
