Profile

Founded 42 years ago with a commitment to building a different kind of law firm, Crowell & Moring LLP today is a vibrant international law firm representing clients in litigation, regulatory and transactional matters together with a market leading expertise in Government contracting. We are continually recognized for our work representing companies ranging from global enterprises to start up businesses, and for our ongoing commitment to pro bono service and diversity. With approximately 625 lawyers and 525 professional consultants and support staff based in the United States, London, Brussels, Shanghai and Doha, and consultancy operations in Singapore, our firm is ambitious and growing. Our London office is central to the firm’s strategic plans.

We have a broad range of practice groups in London, including international dispute resolution, antitrust, corporate, finance, energy and infrastructure, restructuring and insolvency, insurance and international trade. A significant amount of the work that we do has an international flavour, which is reflective of the broad range of clients for whom we act and our office network. Our partners are well-recognised leaders in their fields, and as a trainee, you will get the chance to work with all of them during your training contract.

The Crowell & Moring culture is one of collaboration, inclusion, encouragement and excellence. Moreover, it really is a great place to work, with a team of people who genuinely enjoy what they do and like the people they practise law with. We are a very diverse group (over 50% female in London, for example) and we are extremely keen to not only maintain but to improve this balance. Our commitment to pro bono work is well-recognised, and you’ll be encouraged to get involved right from the start of your career with us. We are one of only very few firms that include pro bono hours in your overall hours target at the firm on qualification.

Training Contract

Our non-rotational training contract ensures that you will have access to a broad spread of work right from the start. Key to success during your two years of training with us will be the ability to quickly build strong relationships with your colleagues, both in London and further afield. The office has a distinct lack of hierarchy, and you’ll be encouraged to approach the partners yourself to pro-actively take control of the way that you spend your time, bearing in mind, of course, the need to marry that with the demands of our clients.

You can expect to have contact with clients from day one, and we will offer you as much responsibility as you can handle. All our junior lawyers have frequent contact with clients, and you will be no exception. Supervision will come from the individual partners that you are working for, and our Training Principal, who will oversee your progress during your training contract, will always be on hand to offer advice and support.

We expect our trainees to spend the majority of their time in the office as we believe it's key to learning and development although there will be opportunity for some remote working from time to time.

The office has access to a range of training sessions, including in-house training that we offer here in London. We also have access to third party training providers, and you will be encouraged to learn and develop as much as you can. Of course, much of your training will be of the best kind: the knowledge, built up over years of practice, which our partners and senior lawyers will be only too happy to share with you.

During your training contract there could be opportunity, depending on interest, for a secondment to our Brussels office and also to a client. This is aimed at ensuring you have experience of different approaches to the practice of law.

Requirements

Academic excellence is important to us; however, we appreciate that some people face particular challenges during their studies. Whilst we expect applicants to have achieved AAB at A-Level (or equivalent), a 2.1 (Hons) at a well-respected university and to have completed both the GDL (if applicable) and LPC with a merit, if there are good reasons why you haven’t achieved these grades then we are happy to take those into account. Our application allows you to disclose these to us.

In addition to your qualifications, we also value those who have achieved in an extra-curricular context and who are well-rounded and interesting. Personality is a definite plus at our firm! Our clients are a diverse group, and truly appreciate the strong relationships that we build with them, so the ability to use a breadth of your own experiences to relate to people you encounter at work is a fundamental skill for success at our firm.

Finally, you must have already completed the LPC and be able to join us in January 2022.
