Profile

Let’s talk Mayer Brown.

Mayer Brown is a distinctively global law firm, uniquely positioned to advise the world’s leading companies and financial institutions on their most complex legal needs. With extensive reach across four continents, Mayer Brown is the only integrated law firm with approximately 200 or more lawyers in each of the world’s three largest financial centres — New York, London and Hong Kong — the backbone of the global economy.

Mayer Brown has deep experience in high-stakes litigation and complex transactions across industry sectors, including its signature strength, the global financial services industry. Mayer Brown’s diverse teams of lawyers are recognised by clients as strategic partners with strong commercial instincts and a commitment to creatively anticipate their needs. The firm’s ‘one-firm’ culture — seamless and integrated across all practices and regions — ensures that client receive the best of our lawyers’ collective knowledge and experience.

When you train with us, you’ll be one of 30 trainees and you’ll have the opportunity to assist our teams on matters that may be multidisciplinary, cross-border, complex and high profile in nature.

Training with us means high levels of responsibility with extensive opportunities to represent clients across a variety of sectors. From leading investment banks to insurance companies and major corporates to hedge funds, the clients we advise are without parallel and our teams work collaboratively to help them achieve their goals.

While hard work is the norm, we offer a great working environment and friendly culture. As a trainee, you’ll be given all the support you need to reach your full potential.

Our lawyers practise in a wide range of areas including corporate, finance, litigation and dispute resolution, construction, real estate, insurance and reinsurance, pensions and employment, competition, tax, RBI (restructuring/bankruptcy/insolvency) and intellectual property.

Training Contract

Our trainees can tailor their Training Contract from a range of different seats, including our main practice areas in London, international secondments and our client secondments in London. For a global law firm, our London office remains a tightly knit team with an open and inclusive culture. You will nevertheless be given significant opportunities to assist on matters which may be multi-disciplinary, cross-border, complex and high-profile in nature. Trainees are given high levels of responsibility, case management and client contact from an early stage.

Vacation Scheme

Our Vacation Schemes are the main pipeline for our Training Contracts each year. We run three two-week Vacation Schemes each year: two in the summer and one in the Spring. All are based in our London office and applications are welcome from law and non-law undergraduates and graduates. During our Vacation Schemes you will assist partners and senior associates on real deals to give you firsthand experience of life in a City law firm. You will sit in two departments and you will also attend skills sessions which support your own professional development and provide more insight into the firm. There will also be a number of social activities organised, including a day at our Paris office.

Apprenticeships

If a full time university degree isn’t the route for you and you want to earn whilst you learn, our Solicitor Apprenticeship programme is a fantastic alternative route to working in law and qualifying as a solicitor. It is a six year structured training programme which combines work and study. It includes a four year part-time LLB Hons Law Degree followed by the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and the Professional Skills Course (PSC) to be completed in the final two years. Based in our London office, the apprentice will spend the first 12 months in Business Services departments (such as Risk and Compliance, Legal Training and the Information Centre) to gain a broad understanding of how the firm operates before starting work in our legal groups. By the end of the six years the apprentice will have the same level of qualification as trainee solicitors who have completed their training through the traditional route.

Salary & Benefits

The firm will cover the cost of the GDL and LPC and provide a maintenance grant of £10,0000 for LPC in London at BPP and £7000 for GDL in London and £6500 elsewhere. The firm asks all LPC students to complete the LPC at BPP law school in London.

Trainee Salary: £47,500 for year one and £52,500 for year two.

NQ Salary: £95,000

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who not only have a consistently strong academic record, including a minimum of a 2:1 degree or equivalent and AAB at A Level or equivalent in any discipline, but who also have a wide range of interests and achievements outside their academic career. Additionally, we would like to see innovative candidates who can demonstrate a drive for results, good verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to analyse, with good judgement and excellent interpersonal skills.
